Methanol is an important raw material for making a broad range of chemical products, e.g. polymer fibers for the textile industry, plastics for packaging, glues, absorbents, diapers, paints, adhesives, solvents, and much more. With demand for methanol rising, an environmental friendly alternative is required to the conventional production technology, which involves a catalytic process using a fossil feedstock such as natural gas or coal.
The technology for synthesizing green methanol from hydrogen and carbon dioxide in small-scale plants was developed in co-operation with our partner Swiss Liquid Future (SLF). For industrial-scale plants our own Uhde Methanol technology is employed. In both cases the hydrogen is produced by means of the highly efficient alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) process based on the proven chlor-alkaline electrode technology developed by thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers. The carbon dioxide is recovered from biogas or other fermentation plants, flue gas or waste gas. The electric power comes from renewable sources, e.g. wind power, photovoltaic, geothermal energy or hydropower. In other words, our green methanol technology makes particular sense in countries with a high proportion of renewable energy.

Multiple use cases
Green methanol is not just an environmental nice-to-have; it can be used in a wide variety of ways, e.g. as an energy carrier for storing electricity generated from renewable sources, as an additive for conventional liquid fuels, or as a fuel for 100% methanol-based drive systems. The latter application is particularly interesting. For example leading shipping companies are also investigating the use of methanol as a fuel in conventional combustion systems and in methanol-powered fuel cells. The great advantage of green methanol is that the existing infrastructure for liquid fuels can be either used directly or modified easily and inexpensively. This provides a powerful lever to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the transportation sector and utilize the existing market infrastructure.
